Oakland based graffiti artist GATS opened his debut New York City solo show at Spoke NYC this past Saturday. “Against the Grain” is GATS’ first exhibition with SPOKE, in which he is exhibiting found object assemblages featuring his signature mask imagery.

Drawing from the long held connection between graffiti and skate culture, GATS paints on vintage skate decks that bring the viewer back to earlier times. The artist’s graphic style translates so well to the skate boards that one could imagine they were there to begin with.

While these pieces are not filled with paint their exteriors are beautifully adorned with not only the mask character but also the artists name in an ornate letter state.
